In a rare and historic judgment, the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Supreme Court sentenced a serving district and sessions judge, Raja Imtiaz Ahmed, to three days in prison for contempt of court.
He was arrested inside the court premises on Wednesday, following orders issued by a larger bench led by Chief Justice Raja Saeed Akram Khan. The court found Judge Imtiaz guilty of defying Supreme Court instructions, committing perjury, and damaging the dignity of the judiciary.

The case originated from a narcotics trial in Haveli Kahuta, where Judge Imtiaz acquitted an accused in direct violation of the top courtโs orders, despite bail being rejected by multiple courts. The accused later fled abroad, leading to the initiation of contempt proceedings.
Chief Justice Akram declared that the judgeโs actions were not merely contempt but โan open rebellionโ against the authority of the court. The rare act of arresting a sitting judge in court highlighted the severity of the misconduct.
