Peshawar High Court has taken serious notice of a tragic incident involving tourists drowning in the Swat River. The court held a hearing to examine the circumstances and responsibilities related to the event.
A two-member bench, led by Chief Justice SM Atiq Shah, presided over the session. The Chief Justice questioned the absence of the Commissioner of Malakand Division and demanded updates on the progress of the investigation. He also ordered the immediate appearance of the Chairman of the Inquiry Committee.
The Chairman informed the court that the committee had visited the site in Swat. He assured the judges that a detailed report would be submitted within seven days. Preliminary findings indicate several departmental failures. The final report will highlight all issues and suggest necessary actions.
The Chief Justice also instructed the Commissioner and Regional Police Officer (RPO) of Malakand to provide written reports. Additionally, he asked for a full report on current measures for tourist safety in Swat.
The court also reviewed claims by the petitioner’s lawyer, who stated that helicopters were available at the time of the incident. According to the aviation report, rescue flights could have been carried out, but were not. The court took notice of this and requested a detailed explanation.
To ensure tourist safety in Swat, the court demanded complete information on helicopter availability and the current safety arrangements for visitors. This includes whether proper rescue services were ready during emergencies.
The court emphasized that protecting lives is a top priority. Ensuring tourist safety in Swat is essential, especially as the region continues to attract visitors.
The case has been adjourned until the required reports are submitted. The court will review them before making further decisions.
