A brand-new spin-off of Cyberpunk Edgerunners has been officially announced at Anime Expo 2025. The popular anime series, based on the video game Cyberpunk 2077, will return with a fresh storyline, new characters, and a darker tone. This upcoming series promises a raw and realistic look at Night City, the dangerous metropolis of the cyberpunk future.
The project reunites game developer CD Projekt Red with Studio Trigger, the animation studio behind the original series. Kai Ikarashi (SSSS.Gridman) will direct the new episodes, while Kanno Ichigo (Promare) will take on the role of lead character designer. Hugo Award-winning writer Bartosz Sztybor and Masahiko Otsuka, both of whom worked on the first Cyberpunk Edgerunners, are also returning.
Sztybor shared his thoughts during the announcement: “Night City has a lot of stories to tell. I wasn’t satisfied with the sadness the audience felt in Cyberpunk Edgerunners, so I want this next story to be even sadder, darker, and bloodier.”
Titled Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, the new 10-episode series is described as a standalone story. The plot will explore themes of revenge and redemption. According to the official summary, “In a city that thrives in the spotlight of violence, one question remains: when the world is blinded by spectacle, what extremes do you have to go to make your story matter?”
Fans of Cyberpunk Edgerunners can also look forward to more from the gaming world. Cyberpunk 2, the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, is currently in pre-production. While the game won’t be released anytime soon, it is expected to launch between 2030 and 2031.
With new episodes and deeper stories on the way, Cyberpunk Edgerunners continues to expand its dark, futuristic universe.
