South Africa dominated the ongoing SA vs ZIM Test with a commanding performance, both with the bat and ball. The standout star was Wiaan Mulder, who played a record-threatening knock of 367 not out before South Africa declared their first innings at 626 for 5. His decision to declare, despite nearing Brian Lara’s iconic 400-run mark, surprised many cricket fans and experts.
Mulder’s innings was filled with powerful strokes, including 49 fours and four sixes. His control and timing showed maturity, especially as he batted in front of his father, who had flown in to witness his son lead the side. Mulder also broke the record for the highest Test score by a South African, surpassing Hashim Amla’s 311.
Despite the declaration, the South African bowlers backed up the bold move. Zimbabwe struggled in their first innings, managing only 170 runs. Sean Williams showed resistance with a fiery 83*, including the fastest half-century by a Zimbabwean off 32 balls. However, he ran out of partners as debutant Prenelan Subrayen impressed with figures of 4 for 42.
Mulder also shone with the ball, taking two crucial wickets. His effort delivery removed Craig Ervine, while a nip-backer dismissed Wesley Madhevere. Zimbabwe was forced to follow on and ended day two on 51 for 1, still trailing by 405 runs in the SA vs ZIM Test.
Earlier, Dewald Brevis and Kyle Verreynne provided useful support, with Verreynne remaining unbeaten on 42. Though Brevis fell cheaply, the damage had already been done.
The SA vs ZIM Test may be remembered more for what could have been—Mulder missing the chance to break Lara’s 400. Yet, his selfless declaration highlighted team spirit over personal milestones. With Zimbabwe still far behind, South Africa looks set for a massive win unless Zimbabwe stages a miracle comeback.
