In a strategic bid to curb rising inflation and ensure market stability, the federal cabinet has approved the import of 500,000 tons of sugar, the Ministry of National Food Security and Research announced Tuesday.
The decision comes amid mounting concerns over sugar price volatility and growing pressure on household budgets. According to the ministry, the sugar will be imported via government channels, with procurement to begin immediately to prevent any disruption in supply.
A senior official said the measure is aimed at protecting consumers and maintaining overall economic balance. The move follows a high-level meeting chaired by Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, where earlier recommendations regarding sugar imports were reinforced.
What sets this strategy apart, officials say, is its emphasis on real-time demand assessment and avoiding speculative market manipulation. Unlike past regimes that allegedly allowed sugar hoarding and resorted to costly subsidies, the current administration permitted exports during surplus and is now importing sugar strictly to meet actual domestic need.
“This is a well-calculated and transparent intervention,” said a spokesperson from the food ministry. “The intent is not just to bring in sugar, but to disrupt artificial pricing and ensure affordability for the average consumer.”
The decision lands at a time when inflation remains a top concern for citizens, particularly with the soaring costs of essential items like sugar, wheat, and petrol. Earlier this week, the Supreme Court Bar Association also voiced alarm over increasing utility rates and food prices, urging swift and people-centric economic measures.
Analysts say this import could help rein in prices over the coming months, especially ahead of major festivals when demand for sugar spikes significantly. Market response is expected to follow closely, with wholesale prices likely to adjust in anticipation of fresh supply. Also read: The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity is coming to Netflix—check out the official release date and what to expect from the new anime.
