Radio Journalist Killed in Southern Philippines Amid Rising Violence

Radio host Erwin Segovia was shot dead while heading home in southern Philippines. Authorities launch probe amid rising media violence.

A radio journalist was shot and killed in the southern Philippines on Monday. The incident adds to the growing list of attacks on media workers in the country.

The victim, Erwin Labitad Segovia, 63, was a broadcaster for Radio WOW FM. He hosted a morning program focused on social issues and local governance. He was attacked while heading home shortly after finishing his broadcast.

According to police, Segovia was followed by two suspects on a motorcycle. The gunman opened fire, killing him on the spot. The attackers have not yet been identified.

Authorities have formed a special investigation task group to handle the case. The Presidential Task Force on Media Security confirmed the killing and said the government remains committed to protecting journalists.

“The safety of journalists remains a priority,” said Jose Torres Jr., executive director of the task force. “Justice for victims of media violence continues to be a national concern.”

Segovia’s murder highlights the serious risks faced by journalists in the Philippines, especially in rural provinces. These areas often see local power struggles, and journalists who report on sensitive issues are often targeted.

The Philippines is considered one of the most dangerous countries in the world for journalists. It ranked ninth on the 2024 Global Impunity Index by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ). This index tracks countries where journalist murders often go unpunished.

Since democracy was restored in 1986, over 200 journalists have been killed in the Philippines. One of the worst incidents happened in 2009, when 32 journalists were murdered in a single attack in the southern region.

The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines continues to call for stronger protections and justice for media workers.

Segovia’s death is another reminder of the dangers journalists face while doing their job. Press freedom groups are urging swift action to bring the killers to justice and ensure the safety of media professionals across the country.
