Murree on High Alert: Section 144 Imposed in Hill Station Ahead of Independence Day

The popular hill station Murree will face strict security measures as authorities enforce Section 144 for three days during Independence Day festivities.

Officials announced the move to prevent overcrowding, manage potential security threats, and avoid chaos in the resort town. Murree, located about 60 km from Islamabad, attracts thousands of visitors during public holidays.

Deputy Commissioner Agha Zaheer Abbas Shirazi confirmed that the restrictions will be in place from August 12 to 14, 2025. During this time, entry to busy spots such as Mall Road and GPO Chowk will be limited to families only.

The decision follows an urgent warning from the District Intelligence Committee, which, in its July 30 meeting, highlighted the risk of large, unruly gatherings during the expected four-day weekend.

Authorities have warned that violators will face immediate legal action under Section 188 of the Pakistan Penal Code. Security personnel will be deployed in large numbers to ensure strict compliance with the order.

In the past, Murree has experienced severe incidents during peak tourist seasons. One of the most tragic occurred in January 2022, when a snowstorm claimed the lives of 23 tourists who had come to witness snowfall around New Year’s time.

Officials are urging visitors to follow the new guidelines and plan their trips accordingly to avoid inconvenience. The measures are aimed at ensuring public safety and maintaining order during the celebrations.
