New Zealand Suffer Triple Injury Blow Ahead of Australia T20 Series

New Zealand cricket has suffered a major setback ahead of their home season, as three key players have been ruled out of the upcoming Chappell-Hadley T20 series against Australia starting October 1.

Fast bowler Will O’Rourke, who impressed in recent Tests, has been diagnosed with a stress fracture in his lower back. New Zealand Cricket confirmed that the 24-year-old will be sidelined for at least three months.

O’Rourke sustained the injury during the first Test against Zimbabwe earlier this month and will now undergo a rehabilitation program. His absence also rules him out of future series against Australia, England, and the West Indies.

Head coach Rob Walter expressed concern, saying the team was “really feeling for Will at the moment and wishing him a speedy recovery.”

Adding to New Zealand’s concerns, Glenn Phillips has also been ruled out due to a groin injury that requires rehabilitation. Meanwhile, top-order batter Finn Allen underwent surgery on his right foot and will miss three months of action.

Both players were crucial in New Zealand’s T20 batting lineup, and their absence creates a significant gap ahead of the high-profile series against Australia. Walter admitted the loss was “disappointing” considering their recent impact in white-ball cricket.

White-ball captain Mitchell Santner’s fitness is also under close watch. He recently returned home after pulling out of The Hundred due to groin pain.

The all-rounder, who underwent abdominal surgery, is expected to take at least a month to recover. Despite this, selectors are likely to include him in the squad while monitoring his progress.

Walter highlighted Santner’s importance, describing him as “a world-class player and a crucial part of our T20 side both in skills and leadership.”

With O’Rourke, Phillips, and Allen unavailable, New Zealand faces a challenging task ahead of the Chappell-Hadley Trophy, as Australia arrives with a full-strength squad.
