‘Mehwish Does Not Look Like a College Girl,’ Says Khalil-ur-Rehman on Casting Sajal in Main Manto Nahi Hoon

‘Mehwish Does Not Look Like a College Girl,’ Says Khalil-ur-Rehman on Casting Sajal in Main Manto Nahi Hoon

Pakistani drama writer Khalil-ur-Rehman Qamar has clarified why Mehwish Hayat was not chosen for the lead female role in the much-debated drama Main Manto Nahi Hoon.

In a recent interview with Sheikh Qasim, Khalil-ur-Rehman said Mehwish Hayat did not fit the role of a college student, which was central to the character. He explained that Sajal Aly was a more suitable choice, both in terms of performance and visual appearance.

“The story required a student character, and Sajal Aly perfectly looked the part,” he noted. “She is a brilliant actress, and it was important for me to work with her. She has done an incredible job.”

Khalil also revealed that Maya Ali’s name was considered during early discussions. However, the final decision favored Sajal Aly, as she not only fit the role but also brought freshness to the project.

Addressing speculation about Mehwish Hayat, Khalil-ur-Rehman dismissed the rumors. “She doesn’t look like a student, and that was the main reason she wasn’t selected. Sajal Aly, on the other hand, is both experienced and a natural fit for the character,” he clarified.

Discussing the drama’s theme, Khalil explained that the title Main Manto Nahi Hoon reflects the contrast between the fictional character and the legendary writer Saadat Hasan Manto.

“Manto was fearless and fought societal disgrace with courage. His pen was powerful enough to challenge even a gun,” he said.

The drama has sparked controversy on social media, mainly over its portrayal of a teacher-student romance and its bold dialogues. Critics have also questioned the use of Manto’s name without a direct link to his life. Despite the backlash, the show continues to gain high viewership and praise from many fans.
