The Punjab government has officially launched the province’s first EV Taxi Scheme under its “Transport Vision 2030”. The initiative aims to provide eco-friendly, affordable, and modern transport to citizens while reducing air pollution.
In the first phase, 1,100 electric taxis will be distributed across the province. Interested applicants can apply online at e-taxi.punjab.gov.pk until October 5, 2025. Of the total vehicles, 1,000 are allocated for fleet owners, with each owner required to have at least 10 vehicles. The remaining 100 e-taxis are reserved for individual drivers registered with Transport Network Companies (TNCs), including 70 for male drivers and 30 for females.
Officials highlighted that the EV Taxi Scheme will lower fuel costs, reduce air pollution, and improve urban mobility. They also emphasized that the project will create new employment opportunities for drivers and support sustainable transport in Punjab.
So far, the scheme has received 1,027 applications, including 2 from fleet owners and 1,025 from individual drivers, with a total of 5,401 registrations on the portal.
To support the initiative, the provincial government has finalized a financing plan for electric vehicles. Partner banks will offer loans up to Rs. 6.5 million, while the government will cover interest costs. Buyers will also benefit from a subsidized down payment, with a contribution of Rs. 585,000 for EVs priced between Rs. 4 million and Rs. 10 million.
The government believes that the EV Taxi Scheme will help reduce dependency on fossil fuels and promote a greener, more sustainable transport system across Punjab. Officials said the program reflects the province’s commitment to innovation, environmental protection, and economic growth.
Analysts suggest that the scheme could transform urban commuting, making it more affordable, cleaner, and efficient for daily travelers.
