ISLAMABAD – Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain on Wednesday chaired a high-level meeting on pest attacks threatening the sugarcane crop. The meeting was attended by agricultural experts and representatives from relevant departments.
The minister informed participants that Pyrilla has shifted from northern to southern regions this year, damaging large areas of sugarcane. He added that Whitefly has also emerged as a serious risk to crop health and overall production.
Rana Tanveer Hussain said the government is mobilizing all departments concerned to counter the threat. Farmers are being guided through awareness campaigns to protect their fields. He urged growers to carry out regular inspections of their sugarcane fields and maintain close coordination with agricultural officers for timely advice.
The minister also recommended the use of Imidacloprid spray to help protect the crop from pest attacks. He stressed that preventive measures must be applied without delay to minimize losses.
Highlighting the importance of sugarcane for Pakistan’s agriculture and economy, the minister said safeguarding the crop is a shared responsibility. He emphasized that collective action from farmers, government agencies, and experts is essential to secure production and ensure food security.
Officials present at the meeting assured the minister that steps are being taken to monitor pest movement and assist farmers. Field teams are being dispatched to affected areas, while awareness programs are underway to promote effective pest control practices.
The government’s timely intervention aims to limit the damage and protect sugarcane growers from heavy losses. Experts believe that with proper monitoring and coordinated spraying, the crop can still be secured from further harm.
