Imran Khan’s Lawyers Urge ATC to Halt May 9 GHQ Attack Trial

Imran Khan’s Lawyers Urge ATC to Halt May 9 GHQ Attack Trial

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan has once again challenged the continuation of proceedings in the May 9 GHQ attack case. His legal team filed a petition in the Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) on Saturday, seeking a halt to the trial.

The petition specifically asked the court to stop video-link hearings until the Lahore High Court’s Rawalpindi bench delivers its decision. Lawyers representing Imran Khan argued that proceeding before the High Court’s ruling would be premature. They further requested additional time to carefully review the legal aspects of the case.

Government’s stance

The government’s lawyer opposed the plea, stating that Khan’s defense team had already submitted two similar petitions earlier. The counsel argued that repeated applications were only meant to delay the case rather than address genuine legal concerns.

The ATC acknowledged the submissions and directed both parties to prepare detailed arguments. The next hearing will focus on whether the trial should be temporarily suspended until guidance comes from the Lahore High Court.

The May 9 incidents, including the attack on GHQ, remain one of the most significant cases linked to the political unrest that followed Imran Khan’s arrest last year. Authorities are under pressure to ensure speedy proceedings, while Khan’s legal team continues to stress procedural fairness.

The court’s decision in the coming sessions will determine whether the trial moves forward via video link or pauses until the High Court rules. The outcome is expected to play a critical role in shaping the ongoing legal battle surrounding Imran Khan and the events of May 9.
