Electricity Tariff Likely To Rise By Rs0.19 Per Unit

The Electricity tariff across Pakistan may increase by Rs0.19 per unit under the August 2025 fuel cost adjustment (FCA). The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) filed a petition, which will be reviewed by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) in a public hearing. The adjustment, if approved, will also apply to K-Electric consumers.

According to CPPA data, 14.22 billion units of electricity were generated in August, with 13.715 billion units supplied to distribution companies (Discos). The cost of the supplied power stood at Rs7.50 per unit, compared to the reference cost of Rs7.31 per unit.

If NEPRA approves the request, the higher Electricity tariff will add an extra financial burden of more than Rs3 billion on consumers.

Meanwhile, controversy over past tariff decisions continues. The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) has challenged NEPRA’s earlier approval allowing K-Electric to recover Rs74 billion in losses from electricity theft and unpaid bills.

MQM leaders argued that including theft-related losses in the Electricity tariff is unfair to honest consumers who already pay their bills regularly. MPA Muhammad Aamir Siddiqui described the move as “racketeering” and “hooliganism,” calling it a collective punishment for Karachi’s residents.

He warned that burdening paying consumers with the cost of theft and losses would further damage public trust in the system.

The hearing on CPPA’s new petition will decide whether the Rs0.19 per unit hike goes into effect. For many households already struggling with rising costs, even small increases in tariffs add pressure to their monthly budgets.
