flydubai has announced new rules on carrying power banks, effective from 1 October 2025. The move comes shortly after Emirates introduced similar safety measures. Both airlines said the decision follows a detailed review of risks linked to lithium batteries.
According to flydubai, passengers may carry only one power bank per person. The device must have a watt-hour (Wh) rating of 100 Wh or less, with the capacity clearly marked. Power banks with higher ratings are not permitted. The airline also stressed that power banks must only be kept in hand baggage, either under the seat or in the seat pocket, not in overhead lockers. Use during flights, including charging devices or the power bank itself, is strictly banned.
The airline also issued storage guidelines. Power banks should be switched off, protected against accidental activation, and ideally stored in their original packaging or a protective pouch. Checked baggage is not allowed for these devices. The rules are part of broader lithium battery safety regulations that also apply to laptops, e-cigarettes, cameras, and other rechargeable gadgets.
Emirates announced earlier that it too will enforce strict limits. The airline bans the use of all power banks during flights from 1 October 2025. Passengers ma: y still carry one unit under 100 Wh, but it must remain switched off and properly stored. Emirates explained the restrictions are due to safety risks, as lithium-ion batteries can overheat or even catch fire if damaged or overcharged.
The new safety measures mean that more than one major UAE airline bans power banks for in-flight use. Both carriers stressed that passenger safety is their top priority and encouraged travelers to charge devices before boarding. Emirates added that all its aircraft are already equipped with in-seat charging ports.
The decision highlights growing concerns in the aviation industry about battery-related incidents and reinforces stricter global standards.
