Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif has openly backed Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz in the ongoing row with the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP). Sources said the issue was discussed during a meeting between Nawaz Sharif and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
According to reports, the prime minister suggested that if Maryam Nawaz avoids harsh statements, the PPP may also ease its stance. However, Nawaz Sharif strongly backed his daughter and said her statements were a justified reaction to undue criticism from the PPP. He added that Maryam Nawaz had represented the sentiments of Punjab’s people.
The tension escalated after Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Memon launched a scathing attack on the Punjab CM in a recent press conference. Sources said the remarks came soon after Nawaz Sharif publicly backs Maryam Nawaz in the dispute.
The political row between the two allies has heated up further, with leaders from both sides trading barbs. Punjab Information Minister Azma Bukhari also dismissed calls for an apology from the PPP. She clarified that Maryam Nawaz would not apologize for her remarks, made during a recent public gathering.
Bukhari pointed to the Cholistan canal issue, saying Punjab had stepped back despite Sindh’s protests. She asserted that the PPP should focus on its governance instead of criticizing the Punjab government. “Why should Maryam Nawaz apologize for defending Punjab’s rights?” she questioned, adding that people appreciate Lahore’s development and expect similar progress in Karachi.
She further said that many in Sindh wish for a leader like Maryam Nawaz. With Nawaz Sharif firmly standing behind his daughter, the row between the PML-N and PPP appears set to continue.
