Ancient Tablet Missing From Egypt’s Saqqara Necropolis

Egyptian authorities have announced the disappearance of an ancient tablet from the famous Saqqara necropolis, raising new concerns about heritage theft in the country. The limestone tablet, estimated to be more than 4,000 years old, was part of the tomb of Khenti Ka, a high-ranking official from Egypt’s Sixth Dynasty.

In a statement, the Ministry of Antiquities confirmed that “all necessary legal procedures have been taken and the case has been referred to the public prosecution for investigation.” The missing ancient tablet was reportedly discovered in the 1950s and had been kept in a sealed tomb that had remained closed since 2019.

The Sixth Dynasty, which ruled from around 2345 to 2181 BC, is known for its elaborate tombs and detailed inscriptions, many of which provide insights into ancient Egyptian religious beliefs and daily life. The disappearance of the ancient tablet is seen as a major cultural loss, especially as Egypt prepares to open its long-awaited Grand Egyptian Museum near the Giza Pyramids on November 1.

This is the second major antiquities theft reported in recent weeks. In September, Egyptian authorities arrested a museum employee and three accomplices accused of stealing a 3,000-year-old gold bracelet from the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. The bracelet, adorned with lapis lazuli beads and linked to Pharaoh Amenemope of the 21st Dynasty, had been sold for about $4,000 before being melted down.

Experts say the recurring incidents highlight ongoing challenges in safeguarding Egypt’s vast archaeological heritage. Despite tight security and international cooperation, the illegal trade in ancient artefacts continues to thrive.

The Ministry has not yet released further details about how the ancient tablet went missing but stated that investigations are underway to recover the priceless artefact and hold those responsible accountable.
