Qatar's Former Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani Dies

Qatar’s former ruler, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, has died at the age of 74.

The Amiri Diwan announced his death on Sunday, July 12, 2026. Qatar’s state news agency also reported the announcement.

The emir’s office mourned the former leader in an official statement. It described his death as a major loss for Qatar.

Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa ruled Qatar from 1995 until 2013. His leadership covered a period of major economic and political change.

He later became widely known as the Father Emir. This title remained in use after he transferred power to his son.

In 2013, Sheikh Hamad voluntarily handed leadership to Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. Such a peaceful transfer was considered unusual among Gulf monarchies.

A Period of Rapid Development

During his rule, Qatar experienced strong economic growth. The country used its vast natural gas resources to support national development.

Major investments were made in infrastructure, education, healthcare, media, and international diplomacy. Qatar also expanded its global economic presence through major overseas investments.

Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa was widely viewed as a central figure in Qatar’s modern transformation. His policies helped the country gain influence beyond its small geographic size.

Qatar also became more active in regional diplomacy during his time in power. The country supported negotiations and mediation efforts involving several international conflicts.

However, Qatar’s growing regional role also created tensions with some neighbouring governments. Differences emerged over Doha’s foreign policy and political relationships.

Launch of Al Jazeera

One of the most important developments during his rule was the launch of Al Jazeera.

The broadcaster was established in 1996 following a decree issued during his leadership. It later became one of the Arab world’s most influential media networks.

Al Jazeera expanded Qatar’s global visibility and changed the region’s media environment. The network covered political issues that many other Arab broadcasters avoided.

The former emir remained closely connected to the broadcaster’s history. He attended Al Jazeera’s 20th anniversary event in Doha in 2016.

Qatar’s Growing Global Influence

During Sheikh Hamad’s leadership, Qatar also secured the right to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The successful bid increased the country’s international profile. It also led to major investments in stadiums, transport systems, and public infrastructure.

His period in office helped establish Qatar as a major player in energy, media, sports, and diplomacy.

Following his retirement, his son continued many policies linked to Qatar’s international strategy.
