End of an Era Pakistan’s Oldest Test Cricketer Wazir Mohammad Passes Away in the UK

BIRMINGHAM – Former Pakistani cricketer Wazir Mohammad, known for his outstanding performances during Pakistan’s early Test years, has passed away at the age of 95 in the United Kingdom.

The sad news was confirmed by his nephew, Shoaib Mohammad, who shared that Wazir Mohammad breathed his last in the UK. He was part of the legendary Mohammad cricketing family, which also included his brothers Hanif Mohammad and Mushtaq Mohammad — both of whom represented Pakistan in Test cricket.

Wazir Mohammad was celebrated for his solid defensive batting style and calm presence at the crease. He made his mark in Pakistan’s first-ever Test series against India in 1952 and went on to become one of the country’s most dependable middle-order batsmen.

One of his most memorable innings came against the West Indies in Port of Spain during the 1957–58 series, where he scored a magnificent 189 runs. His effort, which lasted nearly seven hours, helped Pakistan secure an innings victory. Earlier, in 1954, he top-scored with an unbeaten 42 as Pakistan earned a historic 24-run win over England at The Oval.

Wazir’s first-class cricket career spanned from 1950 to 1964. He captained Karachi Whites in the 1963–64 Quaid-e-Azam Trophy final and later led the Pakistan Eaglets on their 1963 England tour, mentoring several young players who would go on to become Test captains.

Beyond cricket, he served with the National Bank of Pakistan before settling in England, where he continued to be respected in the cricketing community. His contributions as both a player and mentor remain a proud part of Pakistan’s cricketing history.
