Pakistan Holds Key Talks with Afghan Taliban in Doha to Address Cross-Border Tensions

A high-level Pakistani delegation led by Defence Minister Khawaja Asif is holding crucial talks with representatives of the Afghan Taliban in Doha to discuss regional peace and cross-border security challenges.

The meeting comes amid heightened tensions following recent border clashes between Pakistan and Afghanistan. According to the Foreign Office, the talks aim to promote peace, prevent terrorism from Afghan soil, and build stronger bilateral cooperation.

Pakistan Seeks Practical Solutions for Peace

The Foreign Office spokesperson stated that discussions with the Afghan Taliban will focus on practical measures to stop terrorist activities operating from Afghan territory. β€œPakistan does not seek any kind of tension,” the spokesperson said, emphasizing Islamabad’s commitment to dialogue and peaceful cooperation.

Pakistan expects the Afghan Taliban to uphold their international commitments by taking action against terrorist groups like the TTP and BLA that threaten Pakistan’s security. β€œOur legitimate security concerns must be respected,” the spokesperson added, calling for verifiable steps to curb cross-border militancy.

Afghan Taliban Delegation Reaches Doha

Afghan officials confirmed that a delegation led by Interim Defence Minister Maulvi Mohammad Yaqoob has also arrived in Doha for the discussions. Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid said, β€œNegotiations with the Pakistani side will take place today in Doha,” reiterating the group’s willingness to engage in peaceful talks.

Qatar’s Role Praised in Mediation

Pakistan acknowledged Qatar’s role in facilitating dialogue between Islamabad and Kabul, expressing hope that Doha’s mediation efforts will help achieve lasting peace. β€œPakistan appreciates Qatar’s reconciliation efforts and hopes these discussions contribute to regional stability,” the Foreign Office said.

Both sides recently agreed to extend a 48-hour ceasefire to support the ongoing talks. The truce followed a major border clash earlier this month, in which Pakistani forces retaliated strongly after Afghan Taliban fighters launched unprovoked fire.

Islamabad hopes the Doha dialogue will pave the way for a durable peace framework and improved relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan.
