Sitara-i-Imtiaz Awarded in Recognition of Lifetime Service in Education and Civil Leadership

The prestigious Sitara-i-Imtiaz has been awarded to Late Mr. Shahjehan Syed Karim in recognition of his lifelong contributions to public service, education, and nation-building. The honor highlights his decades of dedication to Pakistanโ€™s development through civil service and academic leadership.

Officials said the Sitara-i-Imtiaz reflects his exceptional role as a civil servant and educationist. His work has been widely acknowledged as a model of integrity and public commitment.

Late Mr. Shahjehan Syed Karim served in the Civil Service of Pakistan for nearly four decades. He joined the service in 1957 and held several senior positions during his career.

His key roles included Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. He also served as Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Environment and Urban Affairs.

He later became Senior Member of the Federal Land Commission and Chief Secretary Sindh. In each position, he was known for professionalism and strong administrative leadership.

Beyond government service, he also contributed to international development. He served as Director of Funds at UN-Habitat in Nairobi. His efforts focused on improving urban development and community welfare.

The Sitara-i-Imtiaz also recognizes his commitment to education and social progress. After retiring in 1994, he focused on expanding access to higher education in Pakistan.

He founded the Foundation for Higher Education with the vision of empowering future generations. This initiative later helped establish the Institute of Business Management (IoBM), a leading university in Pakistan.

The Sitara-i-Imtiaz was formally presented by Governor Sindh Syed Muhammad Nehal Hashmi to Mr. Talib Syed Karim on May 13, 2026. The ceremony honored a legacy that continues to influence education and public service.

Officials said the Sitara-i-Imtiaz is not only a personal honor but also a national recognition of his vision. His philosophy emphasized ethical leadership, critical thinking, and social responsibility.

Today, IoBM has produced more than 18,000 graduates. Many of them are now serving as professionals, entrepreneurs, and leaders across Pakistan and abroad.

The values he promoted through education continue to guide new generations. These include integrity, discipline, and a strong sense of civic responsibility.
