Pakistan Hits 197 Million Cellular Subscribers – What’s Driving the Surge?

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan’s digital connectivity continues to grow as the number of cellular subscribers reached 197 million by the end of August 2025, according to the latest figures released by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA). The data shows a mobile teledensity of 79.38 percent, reflecting strong nationwide network coverage and smartphone adoption.

The PTA report also revealed that mobile broadband subscriptions rose to 148 million, pushing the mobile broadband penetration rate to 59.56 percent. The steady rise in cellular subscribers highlights Pakistan’s expanding digital infrastructure and increasing public reliance on mobile services for communication, banking, and e-commerce.

Meanwhile, fixed telephone connections stood at 3 million, maintaining a fixed teledensity of 1.03 percent. Total broadband users—covering both mobile and fixed networks—reached 152 million, achieving a broadband penetration rate of 61.09 percent.

In a related development, the GO Telecommunications Group of Saudi Arabia recently inaugurated an Artificial Intelligence Hub (AI Hub) in Pakistan. The initiative aims to boost technological collaboration, skill development, and knowledge exchange between the two countries.

The launch ceremony was attended by Pakistan’s Federal Minister for IT and Telecom, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, and Saudi Ambassador Nawaf bin Said Al-Malki, alongside industry leaders and officials.

Speaking at the event, Minister Shaza Fatima highlighted that the new AI Hub will serve as a bridge connecting Pakistani professionals with Saudi businesses. “This partnership is not a short-term project; it is a long-term digital collaboration designed to empower Pakistani talent,” she said.

She added that the platform would allow Pakistani experts and freelancers to engage in remote work opportunities with Saudi firms, strengthening the digital economy and promoting innovation.
