India has summoned the Iranian envoy after missile strikes on two oil tankers near the Strait of Hormuz killed one Indian seafarer and injured 10 others. The move came as New Delhi strongly protested the attacks and expressed concern over the safety of Indian nationals working at sea.
According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the attacks targeted the oil tankers MT Al Bahiyah and MT Mombasa while they were sailing through the Strait of Hormuz. The waterway is one of the world’s most important shipping routes for global energy supplies.
The two vessels carried a total of 46 crew members. Among them were 30 Indian nationals. Indian officials confirmed that one Indian seafarer lost his life during the strike. Ten others were injured, including two who remain in critical condition.
The Iranian envoy was summoned by the Ministry of External Affairs on Tuesday morning. During the meeting, Indian officials lodged a strong diplomatic protest over the missile strikes and their impact on Indian citizens.
The MEA said 12 Indian crew members were onboard MT Al Bahiyah. One of them died in the attack, while another suffered injuries. The second tanker, MT Mombasa, had 18 Indian nationals onboard. Nine Indian crew members on that vessel were injured during the incident. Two of those injured are reported to be in serious condition.
The ministry extended its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased seafarer. It also wished a quick recovery for all those injured in the attacks.
Indian officials said the country’s diplomatic mission in the United Arab Emirates is closely monitoring the situation. Embassy officials remain in regular contact with UAE authorities to ensure all possible support is provided to the affected Indian crew members.
The MEA strongly condemned the attacks, saying violence against civilian seafarers is unacceptable. It also stressed that international shipping routes must remain safe and secure for commercial vessels.
The ministry said such attacks threaten freedom of navigation and disrupt maritime trade through international waterways. The Strait of Hormuz is a key route for global oil shipments, making security in the region important for many countries.
By summoning the Iranian envoy, India formally conveyed its concerns and demanded accountability over the incident. The diplomatic step reflects New Delhi’s focus on protecting its citizens and ensuring the safety of international maritime operations.
