Trump Says All Trade Talks with Canada Terminated After Ad Controversy

WASHINGTON – US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that all trade talks with Canada have been officially terminated. The decision came after Trump accused Canadian officials of promoting a misleading advertisement involving former US President Ronald Reagan.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote, β€œBased on their egregious behavior, ALL TRADE NEGOTIATIONS WITH CANADA ARE HEREBY TERMINATED.” The statement immediately halted ongoing discussions that had been focused on reducing tariffs and improving bilateral trade relations.

The controversy began when an advertisement aired in Canada featuring Ronald Reagan criticizing tariffs on foreign goods. The video suggested that tariffs lead to job losses and unnecessary trade wars. Ontario Premier Doug Ford confirmed earlier this week that the ad had reached Trump’s attention, saying, β€œI heard that the president saw our ad. I’m sure he wasn’t too happy.”

Trump, who has long used tariffs as leverage in trade talks with several nations, has maintained one of the most protectionist trade policies in recent US history. His administration has already imposed heavy tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminum, and automobiles earlier this year. Ottawa responded with counter-tariffs on American products, heightening tensions between the two close allies.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney reacted to Trump’s statement by asserting that Canada would not permit unfair US access to its markets. He emphasized that if future trade talks fail, Canada will continue to defend its economic interests and maintain balanced agreements.

Economists warn that ending discussions could strain North American trade relations just months before the scheduled 2026 review of the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). Businesses on both sides of the border have already expressed concern about potential disruptions in the flow of goods.

The abrupt halt to trade talks marks another setback in US-Canada economic relations, underscoring the growing tension between Washington and Ottawa over tariff policies and fair trade practices.
