The Punjab Excise Department has proposed replacing number plates on large SUVs, citing visibility issues with the current small plates. Officials say the existing black-and-white plates are hard to read on bigger vehicles.
Additional Director General of Excise Rizwan Shirani has instructed the development of a new design specifically for large SUVs. He also suggested using color-based number plates to improve clarity and make vehicle registration easier to identify.
The proposed design will consider compatibility with Safe City cameras and include enhanced security features. Excise officials said the design will undergo approval before formal implementation begins across the province.
The initiative aims to address concerns over traffic monitoring and law enforcement efficiency. Clearer number plates will help authorities identify vehicles quickly, especially in urban areas with heavy traffic.
Once approved, the new plates will be rolled out gradually, starting with large vehicles like SUVs and commercial transport. Officials emphasized that the update is part of ongoing efforts to modernize vehicle registration systems in Punjab.
In related news, Lahore has been ranked again among the worldβs most polluted cities. Authorities expressed concern about air quality, urging citizens to follow safety measures and use public transport where possible.
The Excise Departmentβs move to introduce new number plates coincides with broader initiatives to improve road safety, traffic management, and security. Officials say the color-coded system will make monitoring easier and support automated systems like traffic cameras and vehicle tracking software.
Citizens are hopeful that the new number plates will reduce identification errors and improve enforcement of traffic laws. The department plans to announce the final design and implementation timeline soon.
