A case has been filed in Okara district after a middle-aged man allegedly burned pages of the Holy Quran at a mosque in village 55-GD. The accused is reportedly suffering from mental illness.
According to Noor Shah Police Station SHO Irfan Rasool, a local resident, Mazhar Bashira, lodged the complaint after personally witnessing the act. He immediately informed other villagers, who rushed to the mosque.
The incident took place after Zuhr prayers at a small, two-room mosque that has no permanent imam and only a few attendees. Locals stated that the accused was not from the village and had been staying temporarily at the mosque for a few days.
Several eyewitnesses, including a man named Shaukat, confirmed the incident. The complainant also recorded a video of the act, which has been submitted as evidence to the police. In the footage, the accused appears mentally unstable and unaware of being filmed.
Upon receiving the report, SHO Irfan Rasool secured the mosque and arrested the accused. To prevent any possible mob reaction, the police immediately moved him to a safe location.
Newly appointed District Police Officer (DPO) Usman Tipu visited the site, reviewed the video evidence, and directed authorities to maintain law and order in Okara.
Authorities acknowledged that the accused seems mentally ill. The DPO confirmed that the man will undergo a medical examination on Wednesday. Following this, he will be presented before a judicial magistrate for further proceedings.
Local officials emphasized the importance of handling the case carefully due to the accusedβs mental health condition. They also assured the public that appropriate legal measures will be taken while ensuring the safety of the community and maintaining peace in Okara.
