The Democrat candidate, Zohran Mamdani, defeated rivals Andrew Cuomo and Curtis Sliwa on Tuesday night, marking a significant political milestone for the city.
The win sparked widespread celebrations both online and across New York. Singer Gracie Abrams shared multiple Instagram Stories, expressing her excitement. “I’m screaming,” she wrote, adding that she kept “getting chills over and over” after hearing the election results.
Halsey also reacted to Mamdani’s historic win, writing on X (formerly Twitter), “I just got off stage from an amazing show, and Zohran Mamdani is mayor of New York! I am too alive to sleep!”
Singer Lorde joined in by posting a New York-themed graphic on her Story, captioning it, “Change… Have a nice day,” and tagging Mamdani’s account.
According to the Associated Press (AP), New Yorkers turned out in large numbers for the election, casting over 1,036,000 votes in Mamdani’s favor. This overwhelming support has made Mamdani’s historic win one of the most talked-about political events of the year.
Several other artists, including Clairo, Lizzy McAlpine, and Rachel Zegler, celebrated in the comments under Mamdani’s posts. King Princess even suggested throwing a party to mark the occasion.
When asked to describe his campaign through music, Mamdani mentioned Taylor Swift’s Only the Young, Hate It or Love It by The Game featuring 50 Cent, and Right Above It by Lil Wayne featuring Drake — songs that, he said, reflect his journey of resilience and hope.
Mamdani’s victory represents a shift in New York politics, as he becomes one of the youngest and most progressive mayors in the city’s history.
