OpenAI has officially launched its video-generating app, Sora, for Android users in several countries, including the U.S., Canada, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. The expansion marks a major milestone in OpenAIβs efforts to reach a broader audience and strengthen its position in the short-form video market.
Initially released for iOS in September, Sora became an instant hit, surpassing one million downloads on the App Store within its first week. With its arrival on Google Play, analysts expect the appβs total downloads to rise significantly in the coming months.
The Android version of Sora mirrors the iOS app, offering popular tools such as βCameos.β This feature lets users generate personalized videos of themselves performing different actions using AI technology.
OpenAI appears to be directly targeting social media giants like TikTok and Instagram by introducing a feed where users can share and discover short videos. This approach could make Sora a major player in the growing AI-driven video content space.
However, the company has faced criticism for the appβs misuse. Following inappropriate uploads of historical figures, such as Martin Luther King Jr., Sora temporarily restricted related content. The company has since tightened its safety policies and maintained strong moderation systems.
In another move, OpenAI changed its policy for copyrighted characters after facing backlash. The app now uses an βopt-inβ model, allowing rights holders to decide if their characters can appear in generated content.
The company also faces a legal challenge from celebrity video platform Cameo over the name of Soraβs βCameoβ feature. Despite this, OpenAI continues to enhance the app with new capabilities, including βcharacter cameosβ and video editing tools.
Future updates are expected to bring advanced options for customizing social feeds and merging multiple clips into a single video.
