Fazl Says Seminaries Being Forced Under Education Ministry

Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has criticized the government’s decision to bring religious seminaries (madaris) under the federal education ministry, calling it an attempt to control religious institutions through administrative pressure.

Speaking at a press conference, Fazl said the move is β€œunconstitutional and unacceptable,” arguing that religious education systems have operated independently for decades and should not be subjected to government interference. He alleged that the authorities are trying to impose policies that undermine the autonomy of madaris and restrict their traditional teachings.

Fazl further claimed that seminary administrations are being pressured to register with the education ministry and follow a standardized curriculum. He warned that such measures could lead to confrontation between the state and religious scholars if not reconsidered.

The JUI-F leader urged the government to engage in dialogue with religious bodies rather than enforcing decisions unilaterally. β€œWe are not against reforms, but reforms must come through consultation and consensus,” he stated.

He also criticized what he termed as selective implementation of regulations, saying that seminaries are being unfairly targeted while other private institutions continue to operate without similar oversight.

Government officials, meanwhile, maintain that integrating seminaries under the education ministry is part of broader education reforms aimed at ensuring quality standards and equal learning opportunities for all students. They insist the goal is to modernize the curriculum, not to suppress religious education.

Fazl concluded that his party will raise the issue in parliament and continue to defend the independence of religious institutions, calling on the government to respect constitutional rights and avoid β€œprovocative” policies.
