The Punjab government is considering increasing traffic challan fines up to Rs20,000 in a bid to curb violations and improve road safety across the province. The proposal aims to discourage reckless driving and ensure better compliance with traffic laws.
According to officials from the Punjab Excise and Transport Department, a summary has been prepared to revise the Motor Vehicle Ordinance (MVO), which governs traffic penalties. The proposal includes higher fines for offenses such as signal violations, overspeeding, and one-wheeling, as these are among the major causes of accidents.
Sources indicate that the government is reviewing models from countries with successful traffic management systems before finalizing the fine structure. The updated penalty framework is expected to be implemented after approval from the provincial cabinet.
Under the proposed plan, minor violations may result in fines between Rs5,000 and Rs10,000, while serious offenses like drunk driving or rash driving could incur penalties up to Rs20,000. Officials believe that higher penalties will act as an effective deterrent and help create safer roads in Punjab.
The move is part of the provinceβs broader strategy to modernize its traffic management system, which includes digital challans, e-ticketing, and AI-based traffic monitoring. Authorities also plan to launch awareness campaigns to educate the public about responsible driving and traffic laws.
If approved, this will mark one of the biggest increases in traffic penalties in Punjabβs history, reflecting the governmentβs commitment to improving road discipline and reducing accident rates.
