During a thorough inspection of international parcels, customs officers recovered 79.18 kilograms of silver jewellery. The items were hidden in three separate consignments and have an estimated value of Rs66.9 million.
The parcels, declared as fashion jewellery, were shipped from Hong Kong to a consignee in Rawalpindi. Thanks to strict surveillance measures at the IMO, the silver smuggling attempt was detected and seized before reaching its destination.
Officials highlighted that the recent surge in silver prices has triggered a rise in smuggling attempts across Pakistan. This incident marks the first large-scale interception of silver through international mail.
The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) emphasized that such cases of silver smuggling harm the national economy and called for strict action against all illicit imports. The seizure reflects the agencyโs ongoing efforts to curb illegal trade through postal channels.
Customs authorities also noted that vigilance at international mail facilities plays a critical role in preventing smuggling. Officers regularly inspect high-risk consignments to protect Pakistanโs economic and trade interests.
In this operation, Pakistan Customs not only prevented the unlawful entry of silver but also reinforced the importance of adherence to import regulations. The recovered items will now be processed according to legal procedures, and further investigations are underway to identify the networks behind the smuggling attempt.
Experts say that continued monitoring of international mail and courier services is essential, especially as precious metal prices remain high. The FBR reaffirmed its commitment to combating smuggling and ensuring transparency in all import processes.
This successful interception highlights the effectiveness of Pakistan Customsโ anti-smuggling measures and sends a strong message to traffickers attempting to bypass legal channels.
