Sri Lankan media reported that national team captain Charith Asalanka allegedly provoked teammates to withdraw from the Pakistan tour following the recent blast in Islamabad.
According to sources, Asalanka urged players to abandon the ongoing series due to security concerns provoked by the Islamabad incident. The Sri Lanka Cricket Board (SLC) has recalled him, and disciplinary action is reportedly under consideration.
In response, Dasun Shanaka has been appointed as Sri Lankaโs captain for the Tri-Nation T20I series being held in Pakistan. The developments come amid heightened security discussions surrounding the tour.
Earlier this month, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi personally met the Sri Lankan team at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. The meeting aimed to assure players of foolproof security measures after reports suggested some players were considering leaving Pakistan.
Sri Lankaโs High Commissioner Fred Sri Weeratne and Minister of State Talal Chaudhry were also present during the visit. Naqvi inspected the security arrangements and met with the officers on duty, urging them to perform their responsibilities with dedication.
During the meeting, Naqvi addressed the players directly, saying, โYour security is our responsibility. Your continued visit to Pakistan is a victory for peace and a defeat for terrorism.โ
The recent blast in Islamabad reportedly provoked anxiety among the Sri Lankan squad, sparking discussions about the safety of the ongoing tour. However, PCB officials emphasized their commitment to ensuring the playersโ safety.
Despite the tensions provoked by the incident, the Sri Lankan team decided to continue their tour under enhanced security. The PCBโs proactive measures, including close coordination with law enforcement and diplomatic officials, aim to maintain player confidence.
As investigations into Asalankaโs role continue, Sri Lanka Cricket remains focused on discipline and ensuring the team can safely complete the series in Pakistan.
