Apple Delays Foldable iPhone Launch Again

Apple

Apple has long been rumored to be developing foldable iPhones, with various patents and insider sources supporting these claims. While there are reportedly multiple foldable iPhones in development, Apple has been continuously postponing the launch date for one of its larger foldable devices.

The first foldable device from Apple is expected to be a “smaller” version, similar to the Samsung Galaxy Fold in size and form factor. It will feature a 7.8-inch tablet-like screen and is anticipated to debut around 2026 or 2027, serving as an alternative to the iPad lineup.

However, the launch of the larger foldable device has been facing delays. This device will boast a much larger 20.25-inch screen and will be marketed under the Mac name. Its launch is reportedly targeted for 2028.

In addition to these devices, Apple is also planning another foldable iPhone, further diversifying its ecosystem of folding devices compared to its rivals. While originally rumored for a 2026 release, a new report suggests that its launch has been pushed back to 2027 to allow Apple to thoroughly prepare, particularly concerning the supply and demand of the foldable display.

Apple had approached Samsung Display and LG Display to source prototype displays for the foldable iPhone. However, the delay may be attributed to the lack of experience of both companies with this type of display. Apple proposed a design similar to Oppo’s folding screen, aiming to minimize the crease area by etching a groove into the Ultra Thin Glass to reduce permanent marks and ridges.

Initially, Apple intended to unveil the foldable iPhone alongside the iPhone 18 lineup. However, due to the delay, there is speculation that the foldable iPhone could debut independently or coincide with the launch of the foldable iPad, unless the latter also faces setbacks.
