CPPA-G seeks power tariff hike for August fuel adjustment

ISLAMABAD – Electricity consumers may face a tariff hike as CPPA-G has requested approval for an additional fuel cost adjustment. The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA-G) filed a petition with the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) to recover Re0.1911 per unit from consumers for August 2025.

According to the petition, electricity generation in August rose by 7.88 percent year-on-year. Total generation stood at 14,218 gigawatt-hours (GWh), up from 13,179 GWh in August 2024. The total cost of generation was calculated at Rs103.421 billion, averaging Rs7.2738 per unit.

The CPPA-G noted that reference fuel charges for August were Rs7.3149 per unit. However, the actual cost of power generation averaged Rs7.5059 per unit. To cover this difference, the agency sought an upward adjustment of Re0.1911 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) under fuel charges adjustment (FCA).

After adjusting for transmission losses, sales to independent producers, and prior settlements, 13,715 GWh was delivered to distribution companies. The petition also applies to consumers of K-Electric, in addition to Ex-WAPDA Discos.

Hydropower remained the largest contributor, supplying 5,517 GWh or 38.80 percent of electricity. Nuclear power produced 2,145 GWh at a low cost of Rs2.1950 per unit. Coal also played a key role, with local coal generating 1,442 GWh at Rs12.0146 per unit and imported coal providing 1,138 GWh at Rs14.0753 per unit.

Other sources included RLNG, which supplied 2,180 GWh at Rs21.7328 per unit, and indigenous gas, contributing 1,035 GWh at Rs13.4298 per unit. Imported electricity from Iran, though only 78 GWh, was the most expensive at Rs41.0948 per unit.

NEPRA has scheduled a public hearing on September 29, 2025, to review the CPPA-G petition and decide whether to allow the tariff increase.
