Murree Brewery Starts Beer Exports Again After Years of Ban

In a landmark development for Pakistan’s beverage industry, Murree Brewery, one of the country’s oldest companies, has begun exporting beer to non-Muslim countries after receiving official government permission. This marks the first time in several decades that Murree Brewery has been allowed to sell its alcoholic products beyond Pakistan’s borders.

According to Topline Securities, the company has set up a dedicated export department to manage this new business avenue. Although initial export volumes remain modest, the move is seen as a strategic first step toward establishing a presence in the global beer market.

A report by Topline Research noted that Murree Brewery’s non-alcoholic exports currently exceed its beer exports, with a monthly sales run rate of around USD 30,000. The company anticipates that it will take three to four years to build a meaningful foothold internationally, given the fierce competition and established global brands dominating the beer industry.

The export approval, granted by the government, applies exclusively to Murree Brewery. No blanket permission has been extended to other producers, including Chinese breweries operating in Pakistan, which remain restricted from exporting alcoholic beverages. Additionally, Murree has received authorization from the Excise Department to implement a 10–15% price increase, potentially strengthening its profit margins amid rising operational costs.

In terms of investment, Murree Brewery has made a capital expenditure of Rs. 1.5 billion during FY2025. This includes the installation of a new glass furnace, a large-scale project typically undertaken every decade to support bottle production and quality improvement.

Operationally, the company faced a brief three-day production disruption due to a political party’s strike, but operations have since normalized.

Financially, Murree Brewery continues to perform strongly. The company reported a profit of Rs. 960 million for the first quarter of FY2026, up from Rs. 914 million in the same period last year — an indication of steady growth despite economic challenges and supply disruptions.

Murree Brewery’s cautious yet optimistic entry into the export market represents a new chapter for Pakistan’s historic brewing industry, balancing tradition with global ambition while navigating the country’s regulatory and cultural landscape.
