Pakistan Introduces Digital Petrol Management System with Monthly Fuel Quotas

ISLAMABAD โ€“ The Pakistan government has approved plans to implement a nationwide digital system to monitor petrol sales at fuel stations. The initiative will also introduce a monthly petrol quota for privately owned vehicles.

Under the proposed system, citizens will be allocated a fixed amount of petrol per month. No individual will be allowed to purchase fuel beyond their assigned quota. Officials say this step aims to improve transparency and regulate fuel consumption across the country.

Preparations for the rollout are in advanced stages. The National Information Technology Board, in collaboration with the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication, has completed testing mobile devices and a dedicated app designed for the system.

The digital monitoring system will operate through an app developed by the Pakistan Digital Authority. Each petrol pump will be equipped with modern mobile devices worth approximately Rs36,000 each to track fuel sales efficiently. Funding for these devices will be provided by oil marketing companies, while the IT Board will oversee distribution via the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA). OGRA has already instructed oil firms to acquire the devices.

Officials confirmed that the technical standards and operational efficiency of the mobile devices have been verified. A summary of the completed preparations has been forwarded to the Cabinet Division for final approval.

The government is expected to announce the exact monthly petrol quota for vehicles soon. Authorities say this initiative is part of broader efforts to digitize and regulate the fuel supply chain, aiming to reduce misuse and improve accountability in fuel distribution.

This digital system is also expected to support ongoing subsidy programs, including the Ehsaas Fuel Support Program, by ensuring fair access to petrol for eligible citizens. Residents are advised to follow updates from local authorities regarding quota limits and app usage.
