Pakistani freelancers are making a major impact globally, with earnings surpassing $557 million in the first half of the 2025-26 financial year. This milestone highlights how freelancers contribute significantly to Pakistan’s foreign exchange reserves and growing digital economy.
Data from the State Bank of Pakistan shows a 58% year-on-year increase, up from $352 million during the same period last year. The surge reflects Pakistan’s strength in software development, digital marketing, graphic design, content creation, and e-commerce freelancing.
Government Support and Policies
The government has introduced initiatives to help freelancers thrive. Federal Minister for IT and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja emphasized that the government is improving broadband access, digital payments, and capacity-building programs. “We are ensuring Pakistani freelancers can tap into global markets and maximize their earning potential,” she said.
Freelancers contribute to the formal economy with new reforms. Those registered with the Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB) pay just 0.25% tax, and freelancers can now retain up to 50% of their earnings in dollars. These measures encourage compliance and strengthen Pakistan’s digital export growth.
Freelancing Community and Future Prospects
Pakistan’s freelancing workforce includes around 2.37 million full- and part-time professionals, according to an Asian Development Bank report. Chairman of the Pakistan Freelancers Association (PAFLA), Ibrahim Amin, stated that freelancers contribute not only to foreign exchange but also to job creation and youth entrepreneurship.
He stressed the need for structured training, certification, and collaboration between government, industry, and academia to further boost the freelancing ecosystem. With continued policy support and investment in digital skills, Pakistan’s freelance earnings are projected to surpass $1 billion by the end of FY26.
The rapid growth of the country’s gig economy confirms Pakistan as a major hub for skilled digital talent. As international demand for freelancers increases, their role in driving economic growth, innovation, and global competitiveness will continue to expand.
This achievement marks another milestone in Pakistan’s ongoing digital revolution, reinforcing the nation’s position as a key player in the global freelancing and gig economy.
