Sugar Prices Officially Fixed, Government Issues Notification

The Commissioner of Karachi has announced that sugar prices fixed at Rs140 per kilogram wholesale and Rs143 per kilogram retail. The notification has been issued for the entire city.

According to the notification, the new sugar rates will take effect immediately and remain in force until further notice. The commissioner emphasized that no individual or business is allowed to sell sugar at rates different from the official list.

Authorities have also warned that legal action will be taken against violators. All wholesalers and retailers must display the official price list prominently in their shops. This step aims to ensure transparency and prevent exploitation of consumers.

The move comes after sugar prices in wholesale markets declined earlier in December 2025. Abdul Rauf Ibrahim, Chairman of the Wholesale Grocers Association, said wholesale sugar prices fell by Rs6 per kilogram, easing pressure on traders.

Currently, sugar is being sold at Rs146 per kg in Karachiโ€™s wholesale market, while the ex-mill price has dropped to Rs142 per kg following the start of the crushing season. Prices have fallen by Rs54 per kg since December 1, reflecting a significant downward trend.

Despite the drop in wholesale rates, retail sugar prices remain high, ranging between Rs170 and Rs180 per kg. The chairman blamed administrative lapses for the delay in passing price reductions to consumers.

Ibrahim expressed hope that sugar prices would fall further. He projected that sugar could be available at around Rs120 per kg by the end of the month, provided effective monitoring is enforced.

The authorities have urged strict compliance with the official rates. With prices fixed at both wholesale and retail levels, the administration aims to stabilize the market. Citizens are encouraged to check shops for the official price list to avoid overcharging.

This measure of prices fixed ensures fairness in Karachiโ€™s sugar market and helps maintain balance between supply and consumer affordability.
