Karachi Board Under Fire For Jeopardizing Future of 175,000 Students

The Board of Secondary Education Karachi (BSEK) is under fire for its poor handling of the Class IX results for both Science and General groups. More than 175,000 students have been left in confusion as the board failed to issue subject-wise mark sheets along with the results.

Announced last week, the results displayed only a pass or fail status for each subject. Students were not given their actual marks or total scores. According to BSEK officials, detailed mark sheets will be available after at least two more weeks, delaying students’ ability to calculate percentages or evaluate their academic performance.

The move has sparked widespread criticism from students, parents, and educationists. Many have compared the Board of Secondary Education Karachi with other boards, including Cambridge Assessment International Education (CAIE) and Punjab’s education boards, which provide provisional mark sheets immediately after result announcements.

Ironically, the announcement came soon after a meeting between Karachi’s education boards to discuss digital reforms such as e-marking and a new grading system. BSEK Chairman Ghulam Hussain Saho attended the meeting and spoke about modernization efforts. However, the board’s failure to provide even basic digital mark sheets has raised serious questions about its technical readiness.

Sources revealed that BSEK’s IT Manager, Muhammad Irfan, left for Islamabad with the chairman shortly after the results were declared. This left the new IT analyst, Sain Dad, unable to address system glitches. Controller of Examinations Hamza Tagar acknowledged the issue, saying the board was working to resolve it and that students would access their marks within a week.

Education experts have linked the controversy to long-standing administrative inefficiencies. Haider Ali, Chairman of the All Private Schools and Colleges Association, criticized the board, saying, β€œIn Punjab, students get full mark sheets instantly. Here, even total scores are missing β€” it’s unacceptable.”

Reports also suggest that mathematics papers for the Science Group, which were intended for e-marking, were manually checked instead. Despite investing millions in e-marking-compatible answer sheets, the Board of Secondary Education Karachi failed to execute the process effectively, exposing deeper management and technical issues.
