Elon Musk Withdraws Lawsuit Following Publication of Mails

Elon Musk’s lawyers moved to dismiss his lawsuit against OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman on Tuesday, ending a lengthy legal battle between the co-founders. Musk, who co-founded OpenAI in 2015, had sued the company in February, accusing it of abandoning its nonprofit mission for profit. OpenAI denied the claims, calling them incoherent and frivolous, and released Musk’s emails showing he knew the need for profit to fund AI development.

The lawyers did not provide a reason for dropping the lawsuit, which coincided with Musk’s criticism of OpenAI on his social media platform, X, following Apple’s announcement of integrating ChatGPT with Siri.

The lawsuit highlighted differing visions for OpenAI’s future, with Musk accusing the company of pursuing profits through advanced AI development, while OpenAI argued Musk was envious after leaving in 2018 when his bid to have Tesla acquire OpenAI failed. Despite OpenAI’s dismissal of Musk’s claims, concerns about the company’s leadership and direction have persisted, including a recent leadership crisis and the departure of several safety leaders over product safety concerns.
