“On the night of June 28, 2024, during the de-induction from a military training activity, an army tank became stuck in the Shyok River near Saser Brangsa, Eastern Ladakh, due to a sudden rise in water levels. Despite efforts by rescue teams, the high current and water levels thwarted the rescue mission, resulting in the loss of lives of the tank crew. The Indian Army expresses deep regret over the deaths of five brave personnel deployed in Eastern Ladakh. Rescue operations are ongoing,” stated the Indian Army in a statement on social media.

Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh offered his condolences, expressing deep sadness over the incident.

“I am deeply saddened by the loss of five of our brave Indian Army soldiers in a tragic accident while maneuvering the tank across a river in Ladakh. We will always remember the exemplary service of our courageous soldiers to the nation. My heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased. The nation stands with them firmly during this difficult time,” he conveyed in a message on social media platform X.
