A Tribute to Mothers: Exploring Motherhood During Cancer

The concept of Shaukat Khanum Hospitals, in which patients receive high-quality cancer care regardless of their ability to pay, is a magnificent tribute to a mother.

Every day, patients have equal access to world-class cancer care because Shaukat Khanum Hospitals are JCI Enterprise Accredited, a testament to the quality of care and treatment that meets worldwide standards.

On this Mother’s Day, let us remember the courageous mothers who are fighting cancer as patients or carers for cancer patients in their families.

Cancer therapy can occasionally be extended for a year or longer.

It takes tremendous courage and patience to face physical, psychological, and financial problems while making life-changing decisions, such as staying at home and caring for younger children or travelling to seek specialised treatment for a sick kid.

Throughout the gruelling process of cancer care, mothers frequently prioritise treatment, attend appointments, and go above and beyond to ensure that their children receive all of the care required for treatment and recovery.

Read on to learn about the experiences of five strong-willed women and to learn more about motherhood during cancer:

Never lose hope – Minsa’s mother

“My daughter has kidney cancer and has been receiving treatment at the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre in Lahore for the past year.” She had recently finished her last round of chemotherapy. My daughter is extremely young, and she is having difficulty understanding what is going on. However, with the assistance of this institution, we have made it thus far in our difficult trip.”

“She’s OK now, Alhamdulillah. Minsa even finished two levels of classes, playgroup and nursery, thanks to the hospital’s education plan for paediatric patients (Shaukat Khanum Hospitals has a dedicated schooling curriculum for children undergoing treatment).”

“On this Mother’s Day, I’d like to tell other mothers that if you ever feel stuck in a problem, never give up hope.” Look for places like Shaukat Khanum Hospital, where there is always a glimpse of hope.”

Fight for yourself and for your children – Saadia

“I am a Multani homemaker and mother of three children.” Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre in Lahore treated my breast cancer. When I reflect on my cancer experience, I see there were times when I wanted to give up, but the thought of my children kept me going.”

“I want to tell mothers who have recently been diagnosed with cancer that there will be days when you feel disappointed, but you must fight for yourself and your children.” You will soon endure this difficult journey and return to your normal life, just like I did.”

Someone has to share the pain – Ahmad’s mother

“Ahmad was diagnosed with blood cancer when he was four years old.” My husband couldn’t take seeing his son suffer and avoided Ahmad. God provided me with the strength to remain by his side during chemotherapy sessions and regular testing. It was not an easy task.”

The veins in his arms became inaccessible at one point, and blood had to be extracted from his feet. His shrieks can still be heard echoing in my head. But, no matter how tough it is, someone must remain by the child’s side to share the weight of pain.”

“I want to thank everyone at Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre for treating my child like a mother would. As a child, he got special care at Shaukat Khanum Hospital and had access to a playroom (a dedicated playing space for children undergoing treatment with toys, educational materials, and activities to improve intellectual and motor abilities) to distract his focus away from therapy.”

Find your strength – Zainab

“When I was told I had breast cancer, my mind refused to absorb the news. My son was very small at the time and had no idea how his mother’s world had suddenly turned upside down.”

“I didn’t want to upset him, so I took extra precautions to be strong for him, and this became a source of great strength for me as I fought cancer.”

My mom gives me courage – Ahsan, a cancer patient.

“I was about twelve years old when I was diagnosed with cancer.” My therapy is still ongoing, and on this Mother’s Day, I’d like to share the finest thing about my mother with you: she gives me courage. When she’s present, I have the impression that nothing awful can happen to me.”

A Tribute to Mothers: Exploring Motherhood During Cancer

Our mothers are superwomen who play critical roles in the fight against cancer. They show incredible strength, compassion, and love while doing everything they can to console youngsters who are facing the most difficult battle of their lives.

Cajoling them for another diagnostic test or chemotherapy treatment; training them to read and write; and, most crucially, showing them that there is life after cancer.

We celebrate Mother’s Day at Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, a symbol of a son’s enduring love for his mother, by thanking all of the mothers who fill the journey of cancer treatment with strength and hope, and inspire millions with their unwavering strength and commitment.
