Artificial Sweeteners Linked to Memory Decline in New Study

A new study has raised concerns about the potential health risks of artificial sweeteners. These sugar substitutes are often promoted as healthier alternatives to sugar, but researchers warn that excessive use may impact memory and cognitive function.

The research examined seven widely used artificial sweeteners: aspartame, saccharin, acesulfame-K, erythritol, xylitol, sorbitol, and tagatose. Data was collected from 12,772 adults with an average age of 52. Participants were monitored for almost eight years and divided into groups based on their daily sweetener intake.

Low users consumed around 20 mg per day, while high users averaged 191 mg. Findings showed that individuals who consumed higher levels of artificial sweeteners experienced faster memory decline and reduced thinking abilities compared to those with lower intake.

The study highlighted that diabetic patients were more vulnerable to the effects. Since many people with diabetes use sweeteners to manage sugar intake, the results raise serious concerns for this group.

Health experts clarified that while the research shows a strong link, it does not prove a direct cause-and-effect relationship. However, the data suggests moderation is important when it comes to artificial sweeteners.

β€œExcessive use of artificial sweeteners can harm brain health, especially for diabetics,” the report stated. Researchers recommend limiting intake until further studies confirm the long-term effects.

Artificial sweeteners remain popular due to their low-calorie benefits and use in sugar-free products. But this study adds to growing debates about whether they are truly a safe substitute for natural sugar.
