KARACHI: A local court has approved bail for a couple accused of burning minor maid Zainab in Karachiβs PECHS Block 2 area.
Judicial Magistrate East granted bail to the couple against surety bonds of Rs30,000 each. Police had sought their physical remand, but the court rejected the request.
According to police, the victim, 12-year-old Zainab, sustained serious burn injuries on her back, hands, and legs. She is currently under treatment at the Burns Ward of Civil Hospital Karachi.
The investigation report revealed that the incident occurred when Zainab accidentally dozed off while ironing her employerβs dupatta, causing the fabric to burn. In anger, the employer allegedly pressed the hot iron onto her body, leaving her with multiple burns.
The girlβs mother, a resident of Machar Colony, told authorities her daughter had been working as a domestic helper for three months. She alleged that the couple forced Zainab to work without rest and subjected her to torture over a small mistake.
Police arrested the couple accused of burning minor maid Zainab soon after the incident and registered a case. During the court hearing, the defense lawyer argued the complainant was attempting to blackmail his clients, though he expressed regret over the matter.
The shocking case of the couple accused of burning minor maid Zainab has sparked outrage and renewed concerns over the treatment of child domestic workers.
In a separate incident earlier, a young domestic worker was allegedly drugged and pushed from a third-floor apartment in Clifton, leaving her with fractured legs and arms.
Authorities have launched investigations into both cases, emphasizing the need for stronger protections for domestic workers in Karachi.
