Medical experts have advised people with diabetes to restrict their watermelon intake despite its many health benefits. While the fruit is made up of 92% water and supports digestion and weight loss due to its low-calorie content and natural fibre, it also has a high glycaemic index.
This means that watermelon can quickly raise blood sugar and insulin levels, making it risky for individuals with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. Experts recommend that diabetics consume no more than a single portion of watermelon at a time.

To better manage blood sugar levels, doctors suggest eating watermelon only after a protein-rich meal. For example, starting with a piece of cheese, then having the main meal, and ending with watermelon may help prevent sudden spikes in glucose levels.
Although watermelon can be part of a balanced diet, experts stress the importance of portion control and mindful meal sequencing for those managing diabetes.
