97-year-old woman sets record as Europe’s oldest park runner

A 97-year-old woman from Northern Ireland has set a new record by becoming Europe’s oldest park runner. Grace Chambers achieved the milestone by completing her 250th 5,000-meter race in Belfast.

The historic run took place at Orme Park in south Belfast on Saturday. What makes the feat even more remarkable is that Chambers had heart surgery just four weeks earlier. Despite the health challenge, the 97-year-old runner refused to give up.

Speaking after the race, Chambers shared her joy at finishing. She admitted there were doubts about whether she could complete the run but stressed her determination.

“I was glad I did it because there was a chance I might not have been able to,” she said. “But I never look at things negatively. If I can’t do it the first time, I’ll try again and again.”

A record-breaking journey

Chambers has now participated in 250 park runs, securing her place in history. Park runs are community-based weekly events held across the UK and other countries. They are designed to encourage fitness and bring people together.

Her accomplishment has been praised widely. Local runners and spectators cheered her on, calling her a true role model for perseverance. Many said her journey shows that passion and discipline can overcome age-related barriers.

The 97-year-old athlete’s achievement also highlights the importance of staying active in later life. Experts often stress that exercise can improve both physical and mental health for seniors. Chambers’ determination and positive spirit stand as an inspiration to people of all ages.

Her story proves that age is no limit to chasing goals and setting new records.
