A new study from the University of Texas has found that sleeping more than 9 hours regularly can harm brain function — especially in people with depression.

Published in Alzheimer’s & Dementia, the study tracked 1,853 adults aged 27–85 and found that oversleeping was linked to weaker memory, reduced focus, and slower learning. These effects were seen even in people without depression, though the impact was worse for those with mental health issues.

Researchers warn that both too little and too much sleep can disrupt brain health and may raise the risk of cognitive decline or Alzheimer’s. Experts recommend 7–8 hours of sleep as the ideal range for most adults.
