World Hypertension Day Marked Globally to Raise Awareness on Blood Pressure

World Hypertension Day is being observed worldwide today to raise awareness about the dangers of high blood pressure and its impact on health.

Speaking on News TV, Professor Dr. Bilal Mohiuddin, Executive Director of the Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC), called high blood pressure a β€œsilent killer” and shared important preventive tips for the public.

Dr. Mohiuddin stated that one in every four individuals over 40 suffers from hypertension. He cautioned that uncontrolled blood pressure can result in serious conditions such as heart attacks, strokes, and kidney damage.

He emphasized that blood pressure readings above 140 mmHg require medical intervention. β€œStress, job-related pressure, and obesity are key drivers of hypertension,” he noted, adding that among young people, smoking and vaping are major causes.

Dr. Mohiuddin pointed out that modern, artificial lifestyles are contributing to the rising cases of high blood pressure. He stressed the importance of exercising for at least 30 minutes daily to help manage it.

He further advised reducing the use of salt, ghee, and cooking oil, and cutting down on spicy foods. To support heart health, he recommended consuming more fruits and vegetables as part of a healthy diet.
