US President Donald Trump has given Hamas until Sunday evening to accept a 20-point Gaza peace plan or face severe consequences. Writing on Truth Social, Trump warned: “If this LAST CHANCE agreement is not reached, all HELL, like no one has ever seen before, will break out against Hamas. THERE WILL BE PEACE IN THE MIDDLE EAST ONE WAY OR THE OTHER.”
The peace plan, developed with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, calls for an immediate end to fighting and the release of 20 living Israeli hostages within 72 hours. It also demands the return of remains of hostages believed dead in exchange for hundreds of detained Palestinians.
Trump emphasized urgency, posting: “An agreement must be reached by 6 p.m. Washington time on Sunday. Hamas has three to four days to respond.”
Mediators from Arab states and Turkey are pressuring Hamas to accept. However, a senior Hamas official said the group is unlikely to agree. Leaders in Qatar are reportedly open to adjustments but lack influence over Gaza’s military wing, which controls the hostages. A major sticking point is the requirement to hand over all hostages in the first 72 hours, removing Hamas’s main bargaining chip.
The proposal also outlines future governance of Gaza. Hamas would be excluded, replaced temporarily by a Palestinian technocratic committee under international oversight. A new body, the “Board of Peace,” led by Trump, would supervise operations. European and Middle Eastern leaders welcomed the plan, and the Palestinian Authority described Trump’s efforts as “sincere and determined.”
Netanyahu has stressed Israel’s determination, saying: “If Hamas refuses or fails to comply, Israel will finish the job.” Trump also warned that the US would fully back Israel’s military action if the deal is rejected.
Meanwhile, Gaza’s humanitarian crisis worsens. The Hamas-run health ministry reports more than 66,000 deaths since Israel’s military campaign began after Hamas’s October 7 attack, which killed 1,200 people and led to 251 hostages being taken.
As Israeli forces tighten their siege around Gaza City, hundreds of thousands have fled south, though many remain trapped. Aid groups warn that even designated “safe zones” are unsafe. UNICEF spokesman James Elder called the situation “farcical,” noting that schools turned shelters are repeatedly destroyed.
Trump concluded his statement with a final warning: “This is Hamas’s last chance. There will be peace, one way or another.”
