Hurricane Beryl traversed several Caribbean islands, causing at least seven fatalities. It tore off roofs in Jamaica, leaving over 400,000 without electricity, and severely damaged homes on islands in St Vincent and the Grenadines.

Initially a Category 5 storm, it weakened to Category 3 by Thursday but remained powerful.

Preparations are currently in progress in Mexico

Hurricane Beryl is currently heading towards Mexico’s popular Caribbean coast.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami stated in its 8am update that Beryl is expected to weaken over the next day or two, but will likely remain a hurricane until it reaches the Yucatan Peninsula.

In Playa del Carmen, most businesses closed on Thursday, with some boarding up windows. In Tulum, Mexico’s Navy patrolled streets, advising tourists in Spanish and English to prepare for the storm’s approach.

As of early Thursday morning, the storm was located approximately 95 miles west-southwest of Grand Cayman island and 330 miles east-southeast of Tulum. It boasted maximum sustained winds of 115 mph and was moving west-northwest at 18 mph.
