Kiss Lead Guitarist Ace Frehley Passes Away at 74 After Fall at Home

Ace Frehley, the original lead guitarist of the legendary rock band Kiss, has passed away at the age of 74. His family confirmed the news on Thursday, saying he died following a recent fall at his home.

A representative for Ace Frehley, Lori Lousararian, told Rolling Stone that the musician’s death was caused by injuries from the fall. In a heartfelt statement, his family said, β€œWe are completely devastated and heartbroken. The magnitude of his passing is beyond comprehension. Reflecting on all of his incredible life achievements, Ace’s memory will live on forever.”

Ace Frehley played a key role in shaping the sound and image of Kiss, one of the most influential rock bands in history. The group rose to fame in the 1970s with their energetic performances, distinctive makeup, and theatrical stage shows. Known for their black-and-white face paint and leather outfits, Kiss became icons of glam and hard rock β€” and a major influence on heavy metal.

The band’s 1975 hits like β€œRock and Roll All Nite” and the live album β€œAlive!” became timeless rock anthems. Kiss went on to achieve remarkable commercial success, with all 26 of their albums reaching gold status in the United States and 14 going platinum.

Frehley, whose stage persona β€œSpaceman” was symbolized by a star painted on his face, remained a fan favorite throughout his career. After leaving Kiss in the early 1980s, he returned for the band’s reunion tour in the 1990s and continued a successful solo career. His 1978 solo hit β€œNew York Groove” remains one of his most celebrated songs.

Born Paul Daniel Frehley in the Bronx, New York, on April 27, 1951, he was inspired to pursue music after watching The Who and Cream perform live. His search for a band led him to answer a newspaper ad seeking a guitarist β€œwith flash and ability,” where he met Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, and Peter Criss β€” forming what would become Kiss.
